EACH PASSAGE INDIVIDUALLY LINKED

Link directly to the famous parable of "The Blind Men and the Elephant"

I am creating a scheme to individually number and link to each of the 4000+ passages in World Scripture. I am anticipating the growth of this project, such that it could be indefinitely expanded and developed as a large-scale cooperative online project, possibly involving the participation of hundreds or thousands of people.

And it seems to me that a unique URL (address) for each individual scriptural passage could become an exciting facet of this work.

At the moment, I am experimenting with the best way to do this. As I format each theme, I have been embedding into each passage an HTML "name anchor", which, once I individually number it, allows me to link directly to that individual passage.

Doing this raises a number of design issues. For one, is it appropriate to attach a number to a scriptural passage? Does this somehow offend or damage the passage, or is it simply unaesthetic? It has taken me a little time to get used to seeing a number at the beginning of each passage -- but when I recall that the Bible, and many other scriptural books, are similarly numbered, I begin to feel that this might indeed be appropriate.

As of this writing - 9/9/96 - I have more or less settled on numbering the passages at their citation, with a link back to the beginning of the passage. If you have a better idea, let me know.
